BENEFIETCONCERT TRIO ALEOTTI

Zondag 18 november organiseren we ons tweede fundraising-concert met het geweldige Trio Aleotti. Het trio bestaat uit Barbara Kurmann-viool, Harriët Overbeek-cello en Saskia Boon-piano. Zie ook: www.trioaleotti.nl. Zij werken belangeloos mee aan dit concert. Het eerste concert in Gouda maart 2017 was een geweldig succes en smaakte dus naar meer. Wij nodigen alle belangstellenden voor het werk van Amani uit om hierbij aanwezig te zijn. Het voorlopige programma ziet er als volgt uit:

Doorontwikkelen van ons werk

Het Bestuur van Vrienden van Amani wil haar activiteiten verder uitbouwen. Hoe we dat gaan aanpakken is een zoektocht waarvoor we diverse deskundigen in de fundraising raadplegen. We hebben ook besloten dat we een concreet strategisch-marketingplan willen ontwikkelen, waarvoor we ondersteuning zoeken door een stagiaire vanuit een bedrijfskundige opleiding. INFORMATIE OVER AMANI IN MOSHI

We hebben Amani gevraagd over verschillende onderdelen van hun werk informatie te geven die wij in onze nieuwsbrief kunnen opnemen. Aan de hand van verschillende thema’s wordt het werk nader toegelicht. Deze thema’s zijn o.a.:

·      Tijdelijke opvang

·      Begeleid Wonen

·      Jeugdzorg

Hieronder het eerste deel over Amani’s inspanning rond onderwijs, voorafgegaan door een algemene inleiding.

Without a proper education, healthcare or loving family, these children would grow up to live at the bottom of society; stealing to survive, practicing unsafe sex, becoming drug addicts, and dying young from AIDS. Amani was formed as an organization to rescue and rehabilitate the growing number of street children in Moshi through a boarding education.

Since then, Amani has developed into one of the biggest street children organizations in East Africa, working to save children from a life on the streets, restoring their lives through our holistic programmes, and most importantly – reunifying children with loving family members back into their community. We currently work with more than 500 street children and youth per year in the cities of Moshi, Arusha and Singida (and expect to reach more than 750 by the end of 2018). 

Our Moshi Children’s Home houses up to 90 children at one time and is our main staff base/headquarters. In Arusha, we operate a day-time Drop-In for street children and youth, which serves as a basic night shelter for young street children at night. We also do intensive street outreach work in Arusha, as well as intensive family reintegration work. And in 2016, we started our Amani Satellite Centre in Singida; a mini version of our Moshi Children’s Home, including street outreach and rescue, temporary residential care, (basic) education, and family reunification work. The aim of our Singida satellite is to rescue children and reunify them in less than 6 to 8 months where possible. Where fast reunification is not possible, children are then transferred to Amani Moshi for in-depth family tracing and counselling, and for formal education.

As part of our mission, Amani works with street children from across Tanzania, not limited to where they were born or grew up. Many of the children we work with may travel great distances, smuggled in the luggage compartments of buses and clinging on to the bottom of articulated lorries, in order to reach a bigger city where they can work or beg. As a result, our catchment area is not limited. In the past, we have also worked with children from neighbouring countries such as Kenya and Burundi. It is our aim to give every child who comes through our doors, the same level of professional care and support services. 

Our Holistic Care Programmes – Education

Amani’s education methods differ greatly from those of government schools in terms of the quality of education which we provide. We pride ourselves in high-quality education for a severely underserved, and also challenging group of children – children rescued from the streets. The children we work with, have spent anything from weeks to years living on the streets, and for the longer-term street children, there are already a number of ingrained street-based behaviours such as glue-sniffing, other substance use, gambling, petty theft, risky, age-inappropriate sexual behavior etc. These take a lot of time and effort to change, and it is essential that these children have constant counselling, guidance and care to help them develop healthy attitudes towards themselves and their lives again.

Therefore, the Amani classrooms are all small, having no more than 20 students-to-a-teacher studying in one class at the same time – an approach that is vastly different to government classrooms which regularly have more than 60 students on one teacher. Furthermore, children in government classes are usually forced to share materials (often around 8 students per book), are not encouraged to ask questions if they do not understand something, and are frequently subjected to beatings. This education system does not function well as it is, with only 52% of children reaching secondary school, and we knew it could never work for street children. As a result, every child at Amani is given their own materials and the teachers always incorporate fun interactive learning into every lesson through songs, group work, and student-led sessions. It is this effective style of quality teaching which has led to such positive results in our Amani classes.

Over the last 2 years Amani has educated more than 300 children in our in-house classrooms of which 54 (former) street children have now passed their Standard 7 (end-of-primary school) exams and have gone on to higher education; either through joining secondary school or vocational training.

For children who are at the right age for their school level ability, we send them to one of our partner schools near Amani Children’s Home. This allows children to go outside in a normal setting and mixing with their peers, whilst returning “home” to Amani to be cared for in the evenings.
